The Latest teaser announcement on day two of Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii has finally revealed the details of the upcoming 865 chipset. It is said that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Processor will certainly power most high-end Android smartphones next year.
The Snapdragon 865 is the flagship chip that will find its way into many flagship Android phones for the upcoming year. Alongside, The Snapdragon 765 was also revealed that will power a whole range of more affordable premium and mid-range phones.
Both the new chips bring support for 5G connectivity as standard. Apart from 5G, the new chips also bring improvement in AI processing, imaging capabilities and, of course, faster performance with higher efficiency. Both the chips will reach the consumers by early 2020 through various phones across the globe.
So What’s New with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Processor?
To begin with, the Snapdragon 865 processor will bring better performance. Compared to the Snapdragon 855 from last year, the Snapdragon 865 claims 25 per cent gains in CPU performance and power efficiency. For the graphics part, the Adreno 650 GPU promises 20 per cent faster performance and 35 per cent gains in power efficiency.
Qualcomm hasn’t changed the primary CPU architecture from the Snapdragon 855. This year the bigger CPU cores have been upgraded from Qualcomm’s Kryo 485 cores in the 855, which were based on ARM’s Cortex A76 design, to the new “Kryo 585 CPU,” which uses ARM Cortex A77 cores. Four Cortex A55s make up the smaller cores for background processing and other lower-power tasks and are clocked at 1.8GHz.
The Adreno 650 GPU now supports up to 144Hz refresh rate screens with up to QHD+ resolution. The Spectra 480 ISP can support up to a 200-megapixel main camera or a 64-megapixel camera with zero shutter lag. It can also support 25-megapixel dual cameras, 4K HDR videos recording at 60 fps or 4K at 120 fps. It can also record 8K videos at 30 fps. Slow-motion 960 fps videos can still be recorded at 720p resolution.
The standout in the Snapdragon 865 specs sheet, however, is the 35% increase in the power efficiency for intense tasks, like gaming. As powerful as GPUs have become in smartphones, we know peak performance only lasts so long before throttling sets in. Qualcomm says it wants to go the distance with the new 865 chip.
The New Snapdragon Chipset to have 5G?
The Snapdragon 865 is driving 5G in two ways: it’ll offer faster download speeds – up to 7.5Gbps – and be found in more smartphones you actually want in 2020. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem achieves these peak download speeds via mm Wave and sub-6 standards, the backbone of 5G.
Interestingly, the Snapdragon 865 is being coupled with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem as a separate chip. This means the modem isn’t actually integrated into the mobile chipset, but you also won’t be able to get a Snapdragon 865 phone without the 5G chip. They’re a couple, so don’t expect new 865 phones to be 4G-only.
